If you’re a dessert enthusiast searching for a magical culinary experience, look no further than the 3-Layer Magic Custard Cake. This delightful confection is not only a treat for the taste buds but also a mesmerizing spectacle as it transforms into three distinct layers during the baking process.

Let’s embark on a culinary journey to discover the enchanting ingredients that make this dessert truly magical.

Ingredients:

3 eggs, yolks and whites separated

1 tablespoon water

⅓ cup + 2 tablespoons (90 grams) sugar

6 tablespoons (90 grams) melted butter

¾ cup (90 grams) flour

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

1 ½ cups (375 milliliters) milk

Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting (optional)

The Magic Mix:

  • Eggs (Yolks and Whites Separated): Eggs do a double dance here. Yolks bring the flavor, while whipped whites add a fluffy touch. It’s this egg dynamic that creates the cake’s three distinct layers.
  • Water: Just a splash to keep things smooth. Water helps our batter play nice and ensures a perfect, velvety consistency.
  • Sugar: Sugar does double duty. It sweetens things up, sure, but during baking, it also takes a trip to the bottom, forming that luscious custard layer. A bit of granulated and melted sugar adds a caramelized twist to the taste.
  • Melted Butter: Melted butter is the secret to a silky texture. It floats to the top during baking, creating a heavenly layer that’s pure indulgence.
  • Flour: This is the cake’s backbone. It gives structure and balance, ensuring the custard and cake play nice together. A smooth batter means easy separation into those coveted layers.
  • Vanilla Extract: A teaspoon of vanilla extract brings warmth and comfort to the party, making each bite a flavor-packed experience.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt keeps things real. It balances the sweetness, adds depth, and ensures none of the layers are too one-dimensional.
  • Milk: The liquid hero. Milk is the key player in creating that dreamy custard layer. As it bakes, it transforms into custard, cake, and a creamy middle layer — the magical trifecta.

  1. What kind of pan is used?

  2. I made this today- it was really good! Not too sweet, and quite light. Baked at 375 deg for abt 40-45 minutes in a small straight-sided metal cake pan and in a glass rounded-bottom casserole dish, like I usually make a pudding cake in. The straight-side cake pan definitely worked better. I put a plate on top, then invert onto cake plate. Powdered sugar on last.

  3. Where is the link to the actual recipe? thanks!!!
